Rich Curtis

With a genuinely unique and mature sound, forged in progressive house like his exceptional, enduring productions, Brisbane’s Rich Curtis crosses genres from house to techno and electronica. Rich’s name has been in lights in South America, after yet another tour of the continent. It has been five years since our interview for Underground Sound after his first DJ tour there.

For this edition of Underground Sound Signals, Rich has shared an exclusive recording of one of his sets played live in Brazil. It’s an epic odyssey mixed to perfection, a display of passion and skill that is the result of many years behind the decks playing for Australian and international audiences. Put aside a few hours to feast your ears on this and prepare to have your musical horizons expanded.

Rich Curtis: This set will go down as one of my all-time favourite club sets so far, recorded live from my debut at D-Edge (Renato Ratier‘s club in Sao Paulo, Brazil). It sums up everything I currently love about DJing and electronic music. As part of my sixth tour of South America since 2013 I was lucky enough to score a gig with my promoter friend Gui Milani on an otherwise very, very busy weekend of festivals and club events throughout the Brazilian concrete jungle.

Normally I like to prepare at least a beginning and end for long sets like this, especially for an unfamiliar venue. But in this case, I winged the entire set letting the crowd energy take control and walked out on to the street after dawn so full of adrenaline I could hardly sleep for the rest of the weekend. I must say that D-Edge is 100% built for the heads-down clubbing experience right down to the trick window shades which the staff raise and lower after sunrise during the most appropriate times of a given track’s breakdown or drop – just magic to witness!

Coming down from a tour like the recent one isn’t easy, but I’ve got a fairly cruisy summer lined up with a few gigs and even more studio time as I rebuild my production computer on the side (shakes fist at Apple‘s forced obsolescence!). This coming weekend I’m stoked to be playing my first ever gig in Sydney, warming up for Israel’s Khen (Lost & Found) with the Forbidden TØNË crew. A few months later will see the return of Hernan Cattaneo to Brisbane for his 10th party since 2009 and I’ll be setting the scene beforehand for Lemon & Lime. This coming year I’ll also be focussing on a new record label “Context Digital” I’m starting with Sydney’s Verve based on a few unique concepts and ideas which we hope will set us apart from the ever-increasingly saturated stack of labels out there, but we’ll let the music speak for itself in due course!
