April Kerry

April Kerry is a DJ and aspiring producer from Byron Bay, a rapidly rising star in Australia’s house and techno scene. 2018 has been an exciting year for her, with gigs around Australia at festivals and bookings in Sydney and Melbourne. On Saturday 1 December, April will be playing in Brisbane at Capulet for Hidden Valley, and on Saturday 15 December you can catch her at Pacific Hotel Yamba.

This edition of Underground Sound Signals is a showcase for April’s diverse sound, featuring music from major international artists and one of her homegrown heroes. Let April Kerry take you on a journey through melodic sounds into hefty techno, that is guaranteed to get you moving. We look forward to hearing more from her.

April Kerry: I have a mind for dark and stormy sounds, specialising in techno and melodic… but also have a diverse taste for anything that makes you move. I started this whirlwind of a journey a few years ago when I landed my first job in the industry, promoting for a Byron based company called Round Town Promotions. I spent years attending every event in the Byron Bay Area and surrounds, hearing all the different sounds this multi genre area has to offer, going through my fair share of music phases as I changed my surroundings. A major life changer for me was the open-air party scene along northern NSW. Those parties opened me up to the world of techno and progressive, which is very much where I found my signature sound and where my love for heavy basslines was born…

In October 2017, after many months DJing in my home, I was invited to the local hot spot, Woody’s Surf Shack, to play a set for their Halloween party! The crew there gave me a shot, based on the obvious drive and passion that started for me straight off the bat. Fast forward a year and I’m honestly pinching myself daily thinking of all the milestones I have achieved in such a short time. Some highlights being opening the main stage at Rabbits Eat Lettuce Festival 18’, Tipi Forest at Splendour in the Grass, Captain Morgan’s Cove also at SITG18, and just recently playing shows in Sydney and Melbourne, at some iconic venues like Revolver Upstairs and OneSixOne. This summer is gearing up to be a big one with an EP on the way and the calendar already almost completely booked… for now, I’m super excited to be heading to Brisbane at the beginning of December for Hidden Valley @ Capulet, Yamba for my first headliner show in mid-December, and Byron shows almost every weekend in between.

I’m thoroughly enjoying my sharing my sound all over Australia. They’re really not just sets to me, it’s an overwhelming representation of how music makes us feel so connected and brings us immeasurable joy! I hope you all enjoy this set I have recorded live for you, it’s a mixture of what I’ve been playing in my spare time. It begins with a bit of a journey through some of my favourite artists right now. I have so much fun playing heavy techno, but I also get incredible feels listening to melodic keys, mixed with stormy dark sounds…

A few tracks in, we get a bit deeper with one of my favourite producers, Made in Paris. After having the pleasure of hosting a techno event under the APOTEKA name back in March this year with Made in Paris as the headliner, I have fallen in love with this mix of industrial, progressive and dark sounds! I credit Paris for introducing me to the melodic techno sound, once Beatport released the new genre I was sucked in. Made in Paris has really been one of my major influences through this incredible journey of learning and experimenting…

I finish the set with my signature style – heavy, fast and acidy… Filth on Acid being one of my favourite labels for anything hardcore. Drumcode was one of the first techno labels I ever found – let’s just say I am a proud owner of almost every release. I never tend to stray from a face melter, some of these tracks are my go-tos / secret weapons and I’m over the moon that I get to share them with you all! Thank you for listening…
